About Us

The Medical Journalists Association – Ghana is a registered non-profit making organization of medical practitioners from the various health specialties and journalists from Ghana and abroad. It was inaugurated on the 6th of December, 2015 at the University of Ghana Medical School, Korle-Bu. Currently, we are in partnership with the Ghana Journalists Association, Quality Health Africa which is based in the United States of America, African Science Journalists Association and the South African Medical Journalists Association.
Health information is very key in promoting the health of people and the public at large. Reporting on this information can potentially influence the behavior of clinicians and patients. Often these messages are delivered effectively by seasoned reporters or journalists who perform thoughtfully even in the face of breaking news and tight deadlines. But all too frequently, what is conveyed about health by these journalists is questionable which is devastating to the listeners.
Most at times, journalists ignore the complexities or fail to provide context, the public health messages they convey are inevitably inadequate or distorted. Also distortion is attributed to the fact that some journalists find it difficult to interpret and convey the nuanced results of clinical studies. Misinformation of health will greatly affect the general public.
Journalists must therefore become more knowledgeable and to embrace more fully the role in delivering to the public accurate, complete and balanced messages about health. This led to the formation of the Medical Journalists Association-Ghana. We believe that the primary responsibility for improving medically related journalism in Ghana must lie with journalists, clinicians and researchers. Also, with some additional skills, care, introspection and a change in priorities, medical journalism will be the beck and call of all who care about improving the health system in Ghana.
